Prepare the Beef: Gently divide the ground beef into four equal portions (about 150g each). Loosely form each portion into a ball – avoid over-handling the meat.

Preheat Your Griddle: Heat your BBQ griddle over medium-high heat until it’s nice and hot. You should see a slight shimmer on the surface.

Smash Time! Place the beef balls onto the hot griddle, leaving some space between them. Immediately take your burger smasher and firmly press down on each ball until it’s about ¼ to ½ inch thick. Hold the smasher down for a few seconds to maximize contact with the griddle.

Season Generously: While the burgers are smashing and cooking, season the top of each patty generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Cook and Flip: Let the burgers cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes. You should see a beautiful crust forming around the edges. Use your wide spatula to carefully scrape underneath each patty and flip them over.

Add Cheese (Optional): If you're using cheese, place a slice on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking. For extra melty goodness, cover the burgers with a round grill dome for about 30 seconds to a minute. The trapped heat will melt the cheese perfectly.

Toast the Buns (Optional): While the burgers are finishing, lightly butter or oil the cut sides of your burger buns and toast them on the griddle for a warm, slightly crispy interior.

Assemble and Serve: Place the smashed patties on the toasted buns and top with your favourite condiments and toppings. Serve immediately and enjoy the incredible flavour and texture of your homemade smashed burgers!
